The Capital Region's unemployment rate jumped to 4.9 percent in October, up from 3.6 percent a year earlier.
The increase came although the region tied a record for the most jobs in an October, at 453,300, and even added 3,400 jobs since September, according to the state Department of Labor.
James Ross, an analyst for the labor department, said the higher jobless rate reflects two trends: There are more people in the region's labor force or seeking to enter it; and those without a job are staying unemployed for longer periods of time.
