SA: Detention centre fires not surprising, says lawyer
A lawyer for asylum seekers says a spate of fires at Australian immigration centresis not surprising, given the frustration felt by detainees.
PAUL BOYLAN, from the Woomera Lawyers Group, says recent fires at the Baxter, PortHedland and Woomera detention centres were likely triggered by feelings of despair bydetainees.
The deliberately lit fires in recent days have caused extensive damage to the detentioncentres in South Australia and Western Australia.
The Immigration Department says a fire at South Australia's Woomera detention centreovernight destroyed 37 buildings, causing more than $2 million damage.
Mr BOYLAN says he visited the Baxter detention centre, near Port Augusta, about threeweeks ago but there was no hint that fires were being planned.
