Fed: Rudd says there are no blank cheques

KEVIN RUDD has warned teachers' unions they can't expect a blank cheque .. suggesting
it's time they arrive in the 21st century.

The prime minister pledged yesterday to establish new standards to reward school principals
and the best performing teachers.

He also plans to fund teacher recruitment .. development and excellence.

Unions have been highly critical of the government's move .. but Mr RUDD's dismissed
the criticism .. urging teachers to work with the government.

The PM says schools need to get on with lifting standards across Australia and providing
the funding needed to do it.
